And it looks, as I said, like a lovely relationship, but its really only lovely for the spider. I didnt know. Like it could be so important you could have waited this long, years into our relationship, before you finally pop the question, Do you like blue cheese?. Martha Beck: Yes. What theyre going through is very interesting to me and that openness, its made me much softer and more gentle and its really helped me be a better person, for sure. So youre just talking about where its invisible privilege that can be worked with, but thats different from where theres actual narcissism. Now, theyre ready to help others become better, smarter, happier cooks. I think Bev has pretty much figured it out via this. I love this book. And it was a radio program called Queen For A Day. So the metaphor I always use with people, once I figured it out for myself, intellectually, if not emotionally, is that if you ask a spider what it loves and whom it loves, it might tell you, I love flies. Because spiders love flies, the way they crunch, the way they taste, all about flies is wonderful for a spider. Thats how I got out, get research credit for saving your life. So we were talking about this morning. And the reason we thought this was such a great question was because in our culture, for many of us, it is seen as laudable to have this disordered behavior. But then we came to a point where Id been spending so much time out there and it was like, okay, were got to talk to the other people that we go and have dinner with and stuff on the ranch. There really was a lot of time to not be among other people and not have the culture reinforced and the weirdness of it reinforced. Is that when I started thinking about doing a podcast on codependency, I remembered this thing that we did. Rowan Mangan: Rowan Mangan: Just stay in bed, read, Sunday snuggles, coffee in bed. So we would do this thing. Human culture teaches us to come to consensus, but nature our own true nature helps us come to our senses. And it is a VIBE. But another clue is that you start to feel exhausted with other people and you have to go up away by yourself to regain the energy that youve expended taking care of other people. This can look weird but it feels like total freedom. Rowan Mangan: Martha Beck: And again, we, I wouldnt have learned that if we hadnt had the referee system, but its made me open my heart much more non judgmentally to everyone, all my friends and everything and we dont follow cultural rules. Time I learned a little something about this adopted country of mine. Well, Im not big enough or good enough or whatever it is. Tell me both of you, we do this thing called the next right thing where we just tell people one little thing they can do, which lets just tell people one little thing they can do to do a homecoming. So what you do with a kettlebell, its like youre trying to lift an incredibly heavy bucket of despair. Theres some ego work. And that is the truth. Martha Beck: Rowan Mangan: Tragically. We figured. seriously, they were-, They were like, This feels like something you would end up with.. For me, its that keep your heart 100% open and be willing to be told where your blind spots are and to listen when somebody else, even if theyre upset, listen to them. Shes like, I just feel like this fire hose of love, like maybe its sisterly. And I was looking at her and I was like, It is not sisterly, youre in love.. Shes doing all these things and shes tired. And they would all sit around talking about what to do to medicate her so shed be happy in that role. You cant make them happy, you cant make them love you, you cant make them feel what you want them to feel or do what you want them to do.
